My dear Chiram,

Your letter made me so happy! I am grateful Uriah has begun to visit you. Oh, that I were an angel on his shoulder, so I could sit and talk to you as easily as he does. But he has made it possible for us to exchange our thoughts while we are apart, and that is a great gift. Please tell him your wife thanks him and is glad that Yeshua influenced him to do what he is doing.

Our daughters are growing like weeds. My brothers spoil them, of course, and I am glad they have strong men around to encourage them while you are away. My brothers and I have come to a mutually beneficial arrangement. I keep the house for them, preparing dinner each day and keeping the dust off the floor and the furnishings. In return, they take my eggs to the market and bring home food for all of us.

They have even offered to pool their resources in the hope of paying your debt. But despite their generous nature, they do not earn enough to pay your debt and keep food on the table. HaShem could always send an unexpected blessing, I suppose, but that has not yet happened. Every day HaShem provides what we need, no more and no less. Still, we are grateful for His goodness.

Damaris’s husband is planning to join a chaburah and is studying to become a Pharisee. I think he and Damaris thought this would please us, yet my brothers seem offended by the idea of Shimon wearing a Pharisee’s blue-bordered prayer shawl. James says he might as well wear a sign proclaiming his holiness. “Why do the Pharisees walk around declaring their purity?” he asked at dinner recently. “I think the man in humble circumstances should boast in his lofty position, and the rich person in his low position, for the rich man’s possessions will pass away like the flowers of the grass. But the poor man who has learned to depend upon HaShem is rich indeed.”

He may have been thinking of you, dear husband, because we all think of you day and night. The girls ask about you and mention you in their prayers, as do I.

The she-goats are well. Both are big-bellied and calm, which Bethel says is a good sign. Have I told you about Bethel? She is the woman who lives next door, and she has proven to be a great help with many things, including the animals. Our girls love her, and so do I.

Now I must go, dear husband, so I leave you with this Sabbath blessing:

“Mi ha-ish, he-hafetz hayim, ohev yamim lir’ot tov? N’tzor l’shon’kha mei’ra, u’sfotecha mi-daber mirma. Sur mei’ra va’aseh tov, bakesh shalom v’rod’feihu.”

Who is the man who is eager for life, who hopes for long days of good fortune? He guards his tongue from speaking deceit, he turns from evil and does good, he desires peace and pursues it.

You are such a man, husband.

Your loving wife,

Pheodora Aiya
